Team Training

A team is “a group of people with a high degree of interdependence geared
toward the achievement of a goal or completion of a task.”
Parker, Glenn. Team Players and Teamwork

The focus of ActivTimes Team Training is to develop a life enrichment team that creates a vision and turns the vision into a reality. Team building and planning strategies are incorporated into the training. The following questions are addressed:

  1. Are the persons who are responsible for executing/implementing the activity involved in developing the plan?
  2. Is adequate time dedicated for planning? Does planning precede staff development and resource recruitment?
  3. Do you have a baseline of your activity department which identifies strengths and limitations?
  4. Do you have a “vision” for the future? Do you have a written plan for where you want the program to be?
  5. Do you have plans documented and distributed to all members of the management team?
  6. Do you coordinate and integrate activity department plans with the operating budget?
  7. Do you review your plans consistently (quarterly)

The development of a strategic plan within the Life Enrichment department includes:

  • A plan that sees the BIG picture
  • A plan that identifies ways to move from “where we are” to “where we want to be”
  • A plan that guides us to make decisions today based on where we want to be in the future

The steps involved in the Team Training include:

  • Study the mission goals and strategies of the larger organization (how can activity department goals be aligned with the corporate)
  • Develop a detailed description of the present state of the activity department (evaluation)
  • Create a clear vision of a desired future of the department (what you want)
  • Identify discrepancies between the actual and the desire (what is not happening to reach the “Award Winning Program”?
  • Develop a written plan for reducing the discrepancies (addressing the issues/problems by creating a new program, identifying needs)
  • Implement and evaluate the plan

Team Strengthening Activities include:

  • Getting to know each other
  • Creating team identity
  • Demonstrating the value of teamwork
  • Building trust
  • Setting goals
  • Problem solving and creativity
